How Long Does Cocaine Stay in Your System?

Drug addiction is one of the major problems we are facing in today’s time especially in teenagers. Cocaine addiction is one of them. Before discussing the above topic let’s have a brief introduction about this drug.

Cocaine is a white color stimulant drug which is derived from the leaves of coca plant, a native of South America. It is sold as powder and crystal form also known as crack. Popular names of cocaine are BLOW, COKE, CRACK, ROCK, SNOW.

Cocaine is consumed by:

  1. Snorting
  2. Smoking
  3. Rubbing into the gums
  4. Injecting by dissolving in water

When cocaine is consumed it results in euphoric rush and excitability. This happens because cocaine increases the dopamine level in the body which is responsible to control the movement and reward of the body.

  • Extreme happiness and energy
  • Mental alertness.
  • Hypersensitivity to light, sound and touch
  • Irritability
  • paranoia

Other than these effects cocaine has other long term effects also.

Coming to the main question- HOW LONG DOES IT STAY IN YOUR SYSTEM?

Cocaine has a half life of 6 hours that is half of the drug dose is eliminated from the body within 6 hours. The rest is removed within the next 6 hours.

But cocaine breaks down in the body forming a metabolite known as benzoylecgonine. Benzoylecgonine has a half life of 12 hours in blood. It means that this metabolite can remain in the blood for about 1 day.

When removed from the blood this metabolite moves in urine and stays for upto 4 days. This is the reason urine tests are conducted to confirm cocaine consumption in the body.

Cocaine stays in the saliva for 24 to 48 hours and in hair for 90 days.

  1. People with liver disease:

As breakage of cocaine happens in the liver, people with liver diseases find it difficult to break it and thus cocaine stays in the body for a longer time.

  1. Amount of cocaine consumed.
  2. For how long the person is consuming the drug.
  3. Purity level of the drug.
